| | Plans Progress For New Fisheries Facilities |
| October 2011: LPC, in partnership with Independent Fisheries Ltd (IFL), plans to construct a new wharf and coolstore that will breathe new life into our fishing industry after the earthquakes.
Z-Berth was badly damaged in the earthquakes and is no longer usable for cargoes. The IFL coolstore has had to be demolished. The loss of Z Berth and the coolstore has been a blow to the industry, and a number of fishing vessels have had to move to other ports. This has resulted in loss of business for the Port, and for local marine, engineering and supply businesses as well. Now the Lyttelton-Mt Herbert Community Board has agreed to the stopping of a portion of Cyrus Williams Quay beside the old cattle jetty in the Inner Harbour for the development.
The new facilities will provide a necessary boost for the fishing industry, which provides jobs, and contributes to economic growth and people's livelihoods. In particular, fishing is an essential and historic part of Lyttelton's special character. LPC is assuring boaties that they can continue to access the Inner Harbour slipway for use in inclement weather, and improvements will be made to the slipway area. LPC is also encouraging Christchurch City Council to fully develop Naval Point to cater for all users in all weather. |
