Lyttelton Port sponsorships welcomed by Rolleston community

St John Selwyn Central Area Committee, Weedons Primary School and Rolleston Scout Group have successfully applied for sponsorships in Lyttelton Port of Christchurch’s (LPC) latest funding round, saying they welcome the Port’s presence in the community.

St John Selwyn Central Area Committee, Weedons Primary School and Rolleston Scout Group have successfully applied for sponsorships in Lyttelton Port of Christchurch’s (LPC) latest funding round, saying they welcome the Port’s presence in the community.

This is the first occasion LPC has provided sponsorships in the Rolleston area. It follows the establishment of its new Inland Port, MidlandPort in Jones Road in June which provides the first direct rail connection with Lyttelton for freight containers. MidlandPort has been strategically positioned at the intersection of the region’s major arterial transport routes to offer importers better supply chain efficiency and service the increasing productivity and freight requirements of mid-Canterbury.

LPC Chief Executive Peter Davie says many of LPC’s sponsorships help support the relationship between the Port and those that live, work and play near its operations.

“LPC is committed to engaging with the communities in which we operate. Our sponsorships focus on supporting youth development, environmental initiatives and projects or events with wide community involvement and benefits.

“We want to become increasingly involved in life in Rolleston and our sponsorships are a great way to draw closer to the community and help us get to know each other well.”

St John Selwyn Central Area Committee

LPC is a platinum sponsor for St John Selwyn Central Area Committee’s fundraising initiative to build a new ambulance centre in Rolleston.

The development of the new base, on the corner of Kidman Street and Norman Kirk Drive, includes the refurbishment of an existing building and the construction of a garage to house two to three vehicles. The complex will include a community-based training facility.

The Selwyn Central St John Area Committee is also working on the project through community fundraising.

Financing committee member Michael McEvedy says there has been wide support and the LPC sponsorship is particularly appreciated. The funding had enabled a lot of the refurbishment and new construction to be completed. The building is to be handed over to an ownership trust within the St John organisation early next year.

“We asked Lyttelton Port for help following their investment in Rolleston and their staff now having a considerable presence in the area. We’re very grateful for their support,” McEvedy says.

The new centre will allow an ambulance station to run on a 24 hour a day basis. There are staff training areas and accommodation within the facilities.

Weedons Primary School

Weedons Primary School, with 165 students, counts LPC as a close neighbour.

Its LPC sponsorship funding will be used to help promote the Weedons Twilight Christmas Fair on Friday, 2 December (5pm to 9pm). The fair will help celebrate the school’s 145th birthday. It will also be used as an occasion to help welcome LPC to the area.

School committee member Sarah Webb says the Twilight Fair organisers are looking forward to hosting an event that will bring the community closer together during the festive season. “The purpose of the fair is to raise funds for a musical playground for our children while bringing together our school and the wider community for an evening of fun,” Webb says.

Rolleston Scout Group

The Rolleston Scout Group was sponsored by LPC to aid its participation in the 21st New Zealand Scout Jamboree, held in Blenheim from December 29 to January 7. Funds will be used to transport a shipping container full of equipment to the national scouting event.
