Lyttelton Port welcomes U.S. Coast Guard icebreaker Polar Star
Lyttelton Port of Christchurch yesterday (February 15) welcomed the U.S. Coast Guard icebreaker (USCGC) Polar Star which is making a call at Lyttelton on the way back from Antarctica.
“We are very pleased the Polar Star is visiting. This is part of our long-standing support for the Antarctic research programme and Antarctic cooperation,” says LPC Chief Executive Peter Davie.
The Polar Star undertakes Antarctic operations as part of Operation Deep Freeze and has had a variety of missions. These include breaking a channel through the sea ice to resupply the McMurdo Research Station in the Ross Sea. This annual resupply operation is vital for the McMurdo Station operation.
“Our Port has a long association with Antarctic exploration and research and the Polar Star’s supply stop in Lyttelton further strengthens our support for cooperation in the Antarctic research programme.”
