The project to deepen the channel and upgrade the navigation aids at Lyttelton Harbour has been completed. Twenty-two new navigation aids are now lighting up the new channel.

The new navigation aids mark the extents of the recently deepened, widened and lengthened shipping channel, completed by the dredge Fairway late last year. A mixture of land based structures, driven piles, floating buoys and virtual marks, the aids provide visual assistance so LPC pilots can safely guide ships into and out of the port.

The aids are constructed to international standards and conventions and represent one of the most modern and safe navigation systems in New Zealand.

Please ensure that your vessels or the vessels you are acting as agent for have up to date Notices to Mariners Corrections and Temporary and Preliminary Notices for Chart NZ6321 – Lyttelton Harbour.  The relevant Chart and accompanying Notices are:

  • NZ6321 April 2016 Edition
  • 2017 Notices:
    • 25 (Buoys)
    • 169 (Reclamation)
  • 2018 Notices:
    • 66 (Buoys)
    • 140(T) (Aids to Navigation Works)
    • 152(P) (Spoil Grounds, Pilot Boarding Points, Anchorages, Dredged Channel and Works in Progress)
  • 2019 Notices:
    • 41(T) Aids to Navigation Works
    • 42(P) Aids to Navigation Works

These can be found at https://www.linz.govt.nz/sea/maritime-safety/notices-mariners .

Our Pilots may be checking with Bridge Crews that they have these materials, and we ask that you ensure you vessels have them, or remind your customers to update the documents and have them on-board before their next visit to Lyttelton.

For vessels wishing to utilise the deep draught capabilities of the Port (greater than 11.0m draught), please ensure the enclosed compulsory DUKC® form is returned to the Marine team no later than 12 hours in advance of intended arrival or departure.  The form is available here, and in the related documents list below.

The container terminal’s maximum draught is now 13.3 metres at Cashin Quay 2 and 3 East.  All other berth maximums remain unchanged.

If you have any questions regarding the Notices or the requirements of LPC’s Pilots, please contact the Marine team by phone on +64 3 328 7804 or by email at Pilot@lpc.co.nz.
