Port Talk Port-a-Cabin to become Mess facility
The Port-a-Cabin that has been home to Port Talk on the corner of London Street and Oxford Terrace in Lyttelton will be moved from the site to become the new mess facility for the reefer care team at the new Refrigerated Container Towers facility on Cashin Quay.
LPC Strategic Engagement Manager Phil de Joux says while Port Talk provided an excellent service, a reduction in visitors had seen the building close at the beginning of the year. The lease on the site expires in mid-May, and the building which is owned by LPC must be removed.
“Port Talk opened in 2014 following the launch of the Port Recovery Plan and the need for extensive public consultation,” says Phil.
“The building, manned by members of the Port Team provided the ability for the public to find out more about the plan and proposed development at the Port.”
However, over the last couple of years, the community has chosen different ways to contact the Port, through Facebook, email and phone calls and the Port’s regular Harbourwatch email newsletter.
“We want to ensure that the community knows that the closure of Port Talk is not the end of the Port’s communication with our neighbours – our relationship with the community we are a part of is very important to us.”
“We are, and always will be open to any questions, or concerns.”
“Both the engagement team of myself and Pip Webb and our Environment team of Kim and Crystal are always available, and we will continue to do drop-in sessions around Whakaraupō. We’ll also be taking a stall at the market when there are major developments at the Port,” said Phil.
Also don’t forget the monthly free Port boat tours, which occur on the last Sunday of every month, hosted by a senior Port staff member, where you can learn about the Port and ask any questions you may have.
