TALLEY'S GROUP JUMPS ON BOARD AT LPC’S MIDLANDPORT

Lyttelton Port of Christchurch’s Inland Port at Rolleston, MidlandPort, is growing from strength to strength, welcoming new customers and expanding services to meet their requirements.

Lyttelton Port of Christchurch’s Inland Port at Rolleston, MidlandPort, is growing from strength to strength, welcoming new customers and expanding services to meet their requirements.

The Warehouse and Westland Milk were early users of MidlandPort services after it opened last year (1 June 2016), and recently the Talley’s Group has joined the growing customer base.

Talley’s, an exporter of a wide range of premium New Zealand produce including meat, dairy, vegetables and seafood, is using MidlandPort to freight frozen meat and vegetable cargo from its AFFCO and Talley’s processing plants south of Christchurch to Lyttelton Port by rail.

“MidlandPort is creating a new level of efficiency for our operations with improved truck utilization and turn around times,” said Aaron Chudleigh, Talley’s Group Freight and Logistics Manager.

“It’s also reducing our environmental footprint. Delivering into MidlandPort means our trucks are travelling a much shorter distance, reducing city traffic congestion. It’s a win–win for us and other users of the main route south to the city.”

To meet growing customer requirements, MidlandPort is about to extend its operating hours and train services. From 18 March MidlandPort will be adding a weekend train to its existing service, as well as extending operating hours to include receiving and delivering containers on Saturdays. Instead of five return trips to Lyttelton Port a week, there will be six. Export containers for Sunday and Monday services can now be received and delivered to Port on Saturdays and imports arriving on the weekend will now be available at MidlandPort for Monday morning collection.

“This will significantly increase flexibility for export and import customers using MidlandPort,” said LPC Marketing Manager Simon Munt. “Our current weekday opening hours will continue from 0630–1600 hours. However these hours will be extended to meet customer requirements as MidlandPort continues to grow and the number of daily train services increase. MidlandPort offers a full range of services including container repair and washing, receiving and delivery, and services for dry and refrigerated containers.

“This is an exciting time for MidlandPort as it continues to grow, providing unprecedented connectivity for freight throughout the South Island and services the increasing production from the Canterbury plains and the region’s economic growth.”
