Lyttelton Port Company was independently nominated a finalist in the Wellness Programme Award category at the 2026 New Zealand HR Awards, for our implementation of our Health Monitoring Programme.

The awards ceremony, hosted by Human Resources New Zealand (HRNZ), took place at the New Zealand International Convention Centre on 26 March.
LPC Chief People and Capability Officer, Nigel Foster, says being named a finalist is significant national recognition for the company’s commitment to employee health, safety, and well-being.

LPC’s Health Monitoring Programme is an industry-leading initiative and the first of its kind in New Zealand’s port sector. This risk-based health assessment programme proactively supports health and physical capability, helping to mitigate the risk of workplace incidents.

“LPC committed to developing a new benchmark for protecting employee health, safety, and wellbeing in response to regulatory expectations and informed by staff feedback. The programme combines risk-based role profiling with annual and event-based health assessments,” says Nigel Foster.
The programme is supported by dedicated Occupational Health Nurses and includes tailored Health Management Plans.

“After completing its first full annual cycle, LPC has identified and proactively managed health issues among 40% of operational employees, enabling early intervention for conditions that could have posed safety risks for themselves or others. I am convinced that, for some of our people, our health monitoring programme has enabled them to recognise the need to seek treatment for previously unknown conditions which has prolonged their working career at LPC,” Nigel added.

The Health Monitoring Programme has been a foundation for broader wellbeing initiatives, supporting physical, mental, and social wellbeing at work and beyond the port.
