Extra space marked out in the Lyttelton Container Terminal.

Work is almost finished on a major paving and remediation project, transforming a former workshop area into operational container space.

A total of 7,500 square metres of land has been remediated and paved, creating high-value terminal space located close to the wharf.

Project Manager Jonathon Deaker says this is a valuable piece of land for the terminal.

“Being so close to the wharf makes a real difference to how efficiently we can operate, and the additional capacity will support the growing demands on the site.”

Paving project delivers significant uplift in terminal capacity.

The new area provides around 250 additional ground slots, giving the terminal more room to store containers in a critical location.

Proximity to the container wharf has been a key benefit. The new area offers much closer access to vessel operations, supporting more efficient handling.

The upgrade also improves how vehicles move through the terminal. The previous layout required a more complex route through the site, while the new paved area allows for a more direct and efficient flow – helping reduce congestion and supporting smoother daily operations.
