Development: Main gate rail upgrade will deliver long-term benefits

Published: 1 September 2026

Works taking place at Lyttelton Port’s main gate rail crossing renewal project.

A major rail crossing upgrade at Lyttelton Port Company’s main gate has been completed, with operations now back to normal and improved rail infrastructure in place to support the safe and efficient movement of freight through the port.

The project involved renewing the port’s main gate rail crossing on Gladstone Quay, including upgrades to the rail track, rail alignment, level crossing, Lyttelton sewer main, water and associated underground services.

The completion of the project will also see the Te Ana Marina walkway near the Woolstore reopen. The walkway was temporarily closed while the work was under way, and we’d like to the community for their patience while this important work was completed.

The successful completion of the project marks the end of a significant works, restoring normal access for port users while delivering long-term improvements to a key piece of Lyttelton’s transport infrastructure.

Lyttelton Port Company would like to thank customers, locals, businesses and visitors for their patience and understanding while the work was carried out.
