Te Ana Marina now features an Antarctic display highlighting Christchurch’s longstanding connection to Antarctica.
The display of content boards highlights Christchurch as one of only five Antarctic Gateway Cities worldwide.
Marina Business Manager, Matt Blythe, says the boards showcase the people, partnerships and innovation that underpin Antarctic science and logistics.
“We are really happy to see the Antarctic display boards at Te Ana marina, the interest from the public and our customers has been great to see,” says Matt.
Head of the Antarctic Office at ChristchurchNZ, David Tayler, says visitors will learn what distinguishes Ōtautahi Christchurch on the world stage.
“For more than 70 years, Christchurch has been central to global Antarctic collaboration, supported by specialised port facilities and a skilled workforce,” says David.
“Antarctic activity also delivers significant benefits to the region by supporting thousands of jobs in Canterbury and contributes hundreds of millions of dollars to the local economy each year,” he added.
Each Antarctic season, thousands of people pass through Christchurch on their way south, reinforcing the city’s position as a hub for international cooperation.
Right here in Lyttelton, journeys to Antarctica begin, this is our gateway in action.
