FAQ: Cargo Handler - Permanent 32 (P32)

How many shifts am I guaranteed?
You are guaranteed a minimum 4 shifts per week, those shifts are 8 hours each.
When you have completed those shifts, you can make yourself unavailable or remain available to get further shifts in that week.

What shifts do I work?
Lyttelton Port Company operates on a three-shift rotating pattern, to cover a 24hour 7 days a week operation. As a P32, you will follow a four-week rotating roster cycle. Each shift is 8 hours as follows:
• 0700 – 1500 (1st shift)
• 1500 – 2300 (2nd shift)
• 2300 – 0700 (3rd shift)

What do I do on each shift?
As a P32 your two main duties will be driving our straddle carriers and lashing/de-lashing containers on vessels. Have a look at this video to see more information.

Do I need a class 2 licence?
In order to operate our straddle carriers, we require our Cargo Handlers to have a class 2 licence,
LPC can help you obtain your class 2 with a payment plan, while working for LPC. LPC can make the payment upfront and agree a repayment plan with you.

What benefits do I get for working for LPC?
LPC offers great benefits to all its employees, dependent on your contract, these range from matching superannuation schemes up to 8% along with medical insurance subsidy and an additional 3 days shift workers leave allowance.

Do I get overtime?
Yes, when you have worked more than 40 hours per week, the overtime rate is 1.5x base rate.

Do I get a night shift allowance?
Yes, a nightshift allowance of $92.51 is paid for every 3rd shift you work.

Do I park on site?
Yes, we have dedicated parking for shift workers.

Do I get PPE provided?
Yes, all PPE is provided. Including all wet weather gear.

What sort of training do I get?
When you become a P32 you do a mixture of classroom and practical training to get a solid understanding of LPC. This paid training lasts for 2 weeks.
