Port News: LPC hits Eight Million TEU Milestone

The eight millionth container has been discharged at the Port of Lyttelton.

The forty-foot container from Tauranga containing ‘paper’ was aboard the Rio Negro A and could have been toilet paper from Kawerau.

According to the roster, the crane driver who lifted the 8,000,000th container was Steve Geddis.

LYTTELTON CONTAINER TERMINAL HISTORY

LPC received its first container vessel in 1973 and gained momentum in 1995 with Lyttelton completing its first millionth TEU in 2000.

Luckily, it’s taking less than 27 years to move a million TEU these days, and we are now completing this in less than every 2.5 years!

The last million TEU took just 26 months.
