The Lyttelton Historical Museum Society’s Christmas party was made all the more joyous with the announcement of a $150,000 donation, over three years, towards their goal of building Te Ūaka / Lyttelton Museum.

The contribution was announced by LPC CEO Roger Gray at the Christmas party, held on the site Te Ūaka is slated to be built on London Street, on Wednesday 8 December.

Peter Rough, the Lyttelton Historical Museum Society president, said the project team is “extremely grateful” for the financial contribution.

“It will greatly assist in the building of a new museum to replace the one that was destroyed over ten years ago in the Canterbury earthquakes.

“The Lyttelton Port Company’s contribution will be a significant boost towards realising a new purpose-built museum to safeguard and share precious taonga of Whakaraupō/Lyttelton Harbour and tell stories, such as those about epic voyages of exploration to Antarctica,” he said.

Roger said he was thrilled to announce the backing of LPC in the worthy community-led project.

“LPC is a proud part of the Whakaraupō community, and our history is inextricably linked to the rest of the harbour.

“LPC is thrilled to contribute to such a worthy and historic project, in no small part because so much of the area’s history is shared.

“We hope our show of support for the project will be the foundation for the fundraising effort and encourage many more contributions,” Roger said.
