A new interpretive sign has been installed at LPC’s Gollans Bay covenant site, raising awareness of the area’s unique environmental values and ongoing restoration work for those walking or biking along the Crater Rim Walkway.

Established in partnership with the Banks Peninsula Conservation Trust in 2024, the 11.4-hectare covenant protects a naturally rare ecosystem that is home to at-risk skinks, geckos and several threatened native plant species.

Restoration activities at the site includes pest control, weed management, native planting and lizard monitoring.

The marker shows the location of the track.

Head of Environment and Sustainability, Crystal Lenky, says the sign was designed by EOS Ecology and built and installed by Brent O’Leary and Rod Bunn from LPC’s Civil Maintenance team.

“We’re grateful to Brent and Rob for their contribution. The sign is great addition to the site and helps connect people with the conservation work happening here,” says Crystal.

“Gollans Bay is a special place with some of Banks Peninsula’s most unique native species,” says Crystal.

Parking is available at the Captain Thomas Track trailhead. Follow Summit Road and take the first track on the right after the cattle stop.
