Port News: Countdown to SailGP

Construction is underway at Naval Point for one of the most biggest sports events of the year in Christchurch.

Twenty-thousand spectators are expected to descend on Lyttelton to watch the SailGP when racing starts on Saturday, March 23rd.

The F50s will be flying across Whakaraupō following SailGP’s decision not to race in Auckland this year.

Twenty Thousand Spectators Over Two Race Days

Sport fans will have extended views of the race course with an extra 2000 seats added to the grandstand taking it from 6000 to 8000 seats.

There are four spectator options, including a family area for parents with prams, corporate suites constructed along the waterfront, and a VIP section on Naval Point similar to last year.

A hundred and ten containers are due in Lyttelton on March 7, bringing with them the SailGP boats and travelling roadshow from the Sydney event.
