Port News: SailGP Returns to Lyttelton in 2024 and 2025

The flying F50s are back in Whakaraupō Lyttelton Harbour for March 2024

After SailGP’s decision not to race in Auckland, Ōtautahi Christchurch has stepped in to ensure the event will go ahead in Lyttelton in 2024.

LPC fully supports the return of the international sailing event and has worked closely with the Harbourmaster and SailGP with planning and ensuring the operational impact on the port is minimal.

CEO Graeme Sumner said news of SailGP’s return in 2024 is “very exciting”.

“There will be a few changes, we won’t be closing the Inner Harbour and hope the weather and the conditions are the same as the last successful event,” said Graeme Sumner.

LPC intends to hold a staff event on the Cruise Berth, the same as earlier this year on the first day of racing, getting you close to the live action.

ChristchurchNZ General Manager of Destination and Attraction Loren Aberhart said a key consideration was ensuring the safety of the marine mammals of Whakaraupō.

“A review of the Marine Mammal Management Plan has begun in partnership with Te Hapū o Ngāti Wheke Rāpaki, the Department of Conservation and SailGP.

The plan is underpinned by the fundamental principle that the protection of marine mammals, particularly the Hector’s Dolphin, is paramount,” said Loren Aberhart.

ChristchurchNZ has also taken on board the feedback about enhancing the retail opportunities for Lyttelton and the central city and is confident that they can deliver an excellent event.

The SailGP 2025 event will also be held in Ōtautahi Christchurch as planned.
