LPC and transport providers have introduced a standard set of hand signals for truck exchanges to improve safety and communication between straddle drivers and truck drivers.

The change follows the identification of different hand signals being used, with no agreed standard in place. LPC and transport providers worked together to develop one consistent approach that everyone can follow.

Head of Container Terminal Operations, Joe Smedley, says the new signals would provide greater clarity for both LPC staff and truck drivers.

“Having one agreed set of hand signals means everyone knows exactly what to expect. It’s a simple, practical improvement that supports safer and more efficient operations,” says Joe.

The signals were shared with transport associations through South Island Port User Working Group (SIPUWG) last week and are now displayed on site as the standard for truck exchange operations.
